Chapter 2

The Seed

“Your True Self is who you objectively are from the beginning…”— Richard Rohr

Bo is six foot seven, two hundred and forty-five pounds.

When you see him, you immediately notice how put together he is. He walks into a room and people who don’t know a thing about him still find a reason to mention it later — the size of him, the way a doorframe looks a little too small.

The way he can stand flat-footed and two-hand slam dunk a medicine ball.

And when he plants his back foot on a mound and lets a baseball go, it crosses the plate at 104 miles an hour.

There are a small number of human beings alive who can do that. Bo is one of them.

And yes, he’s a lefty.

Child of God.
Pro athlete.
I’m a Dad.

Those could all be true, but none of them is the whole story.

Your identity is that specific. Even more specific.

This book is about finding it, and the freedom that follows.

What people are saying.

I have done the therapy, the books, the retreats. Freedom Lab is different. It is not about fixing what is broken. It is about unlocking who you already are to lead at the level you are capable of.

Owner & Operator, Global Organization

Business Owner, 50+ Employee Company

“Most leadership coaching feels reactive. Here, I am building clarity and momentum from my identity.”

CEO, Multi-State Tech Company

“Not one day has passed without a team member bringing it up again. Truly transformational!”

Division 1 Athletic Director

“I’ve been doing this for 40 years. That’s the best speaker I’ve ever seen.”

Insurance Executive

About the author

Tate Unruh

Tate Unruh played professional basketball for six years, then worked in sales. Around 35, he hit a wall. He could describe everything he’d done, but he had no language for who he was.

The work that followed became Freedom Lab, and this book. He’s a dad of five and lives in the Kansas City area.
